Since our last Newsletter we have received our OFSTED report and are beginning to update the College Improvement Plan in the light of our own evaluations that OFSTED endorsed when they visited. Many of you have commented that a ‘Satisfactory’ judgement doesn’t reflect the scale of improvements that people recognise. It is certainly the case that we can set our sights on getting a ‘Good’ next time around and, indeed, some of this work has already been achieved.
If you would like to join us for a discussion about the future direction of the College, please come to a Parents’ Information Evening on Wednesday 24th February at 6.00pm in Stucley Hall.
The Theatre building has just been demolished and the rubble is now being used to create the right levels at the back of the site to allow landscaping and turf laying when it has settled. We are now into the detailed planning of the arrangements for ‘the move’, the September opening and for ‘Phase 2’ – the period when we have moved in and whilst the existing buildings are cleared and the landscaping of the sports facilities takes place. There is no doubt that this will be a ‘tight’ year but we always knew this would be the case.

Morgan Ashurst, the contractors, continue to be sensitive to the needs of the College and always bring a common sense approach to whatever issue or plans are being considered. We have been so lucky to have them working with us and I am astonished at some of the stories I hear from the Heads and Principals of other schools that have had major building programmes.
The uniform for the new College has been agreed by Governors, taking account of the many comments that have been made along the way by students, their parents and staff. The current uniform became ever more popular as the consultation process continued so this is one of the options, to continue wearing it as students do now. A lot of people also wanted the uniform to be smarter and several didn’t like the round or crew necked sweatshirt. For this reason, it will also be possible to buy V-necked sweatshirts that can be worn with a shirt and a College tie. Samples will be on display in Stucley Dining Hall on Progress Day. The issue of outer clothing is still an issue as this is where so many of our students are seen and where, as a College, we look most untidy.
We have found a fleece lined reversible showerproof coat that sells – with College badge – for around £16 but several parents have said that they want their children to be seen by traffic on dark winter’s nights so this is still under discussion. One suggestion is that students can wear their own outer clothing provided that it is the College colours of white and black and possibly ‘true red’. What do you think?
The building names have been chosen:
A (English, Library, SEN, Offices) = Abbotsham
B (History, Geography, Languages, RE & PSHE, Law, Sociology) = Brunel
C (Art and Technology) = Chichester
D (Art and Technology) = Da Vinci
E (Music) = Elgar
F (Science, Maths, ICT, Health & Social Care) = Franklin (Rosalind Franklin, she ‘discovered’ DNA)
G (Science, Maths, ICT, Health & Social Care) = Galileo
Students who join us in year 7 in September will be placed into houses as well as into Tutor Groups and this model will move up through the College with them. The names for these houses have not yet been confirmed and may be left for the year 7 students to choose when they are with us.
These are very exciting times. There is certainly a lot to be done and list making is an essential part of our day-to-day work! Everyone wants the move into the new building to be a fresh start for the College and for it (the move and the College) to be successful in every way. We are currently also discussing opening ceremonies and if you have any interesting thoughts about these, I would like to hear from you! .

V. Matthews, Principal

Regular visitors to the College website will have noticed a few changes recently as part of our continual rolling development to provide the very best online resources that we possibly can. The website’s homepage has had a facelift that should help convey a clearer message & help navigation as well as featuring a ‘news feed’ from the all new ‘Online News’ area. This has been developed to give a quick & up to date portal for all the news & events that happen behind the school gates. (www.bideford.devon.sch.uk/news) The homepage continues to feature links to the ‘School Of The Future’ website as we draw ever closer to moving in, in one and a half terms time.
Student Homepages
With nearly one & a quarter million hits to this particular area of the website in the past 4 years another new development has been the total overhaul of our student homepages. Among other things these pages now feature a rolling news blog which highlights College wide events as well as current affairs & issues that affect our students, a comprehensive list of links to internet & child safety websites as well as local clubs & resources.
We have also been running polls & surveys through the student area to assist us in developing better provision for the kinds of online resources our students require.
There is also provision for students to feedback their thoughts and ideas via comments & contact forms.

Ms Marquet Georgiou and Ms Stewart This term for the first time in a number of years, two teams from Bideford College entered the Youth Speaks Rotary Competition, a public speaking contest for young people under seventeen years of age. College teams competed in two categories, Intermediate and Senior, in the first round against Kingsley School. The enthusiastic Senior team put in a sterling performance but lost out by the narrowest of margins – only one point separated the two teams! The lively Intermediate team, comprising Tillie Harris, Poppy Flaxman and Alicia Oke had a unique topic and an animated and bright speaking manner. This team deservedly won their head-to-head, and will be going forward to compete further against other local teams.
An outstanding result! We are delighted with the Intermediate’s success so far – watch this space for further news!

From Mr Patrick Neill, Head of Sixth Form
Sixth Form Information Evening
This important annual event took place on 27 January in the Theatre and Abbotsham building for all Year 11 students. The evening provided an excellent opportunity for students to find out the wide range of courses that are available and to have the chance to speak to subject teachers and current Sixth Form students. Individual interviews for students to join the Sixth Form have already started. If your son or daughter has not yet applied, they can still do so by obtaining an application pack from Student Reception.
Exams and Results Day
The majority of Sixth Form students were involved in important external exams in January. The results will be available on 11th March with written confirmation on 18th March - students will have very little time to decide if they wish to resit any of their exams following their results.
Year 12 Parents’ Evening
This will take place on Thursday 18th March in Stucley starting at 4.30pm. Your son or daughter will be given appointments sheets shortly after half term.
Update on University applications
The majority of Sixth Form students have received many offers from universities they have been applying to since last term. For some professions, such as teaching and nursing, students have to attend either group or individual interviews as part of the selection process. Meanwhile for those students who are planning to study Art, they are now busy completing their portfolios prior to interviews that take place shortly. This year we also have several students who are successfully applying for Year in Industry positions as part of their Gap Year.
Visit to Higher Education Convention Exeter
Year 12 students will be visiting the Higher Education Convention at Westpoint Arena on Tuesday 16 March. This will provide students with an invaluable opportunity to see what over 120 universities have to offer, and presents an ideal occasion for them to investigate possible course and institution options. In addition there are talks covering a wide range of topics – from medicine and dentistry to law and business.
Learn 2 Live Presentation
All Year 12 Sixth Form students will be attending a Devon County Council Road Safety Show at the Queens Theatre in Barnstaple on 23 February; this event is being shown to all Sixth Form students across the County. It is particularly hard hitting and will certainly make a huge impact on all who attend.
Student Finance Arrangements for University applicants
As you will be aware student finance arrangements in general have been in the media spotlight due to large numbers of students not receiving their loans in time for their September start dates. All student finance matters are no longer under the control of Local Authorities as this has been passed on to the Student Loans Company. All Year 13 students who are planning to go to university this September have been advised to start applying for their loans now in order to avoid any difficulties for September 2010! They can apply via www.ucas.com and click on the student finance link, via Track on the same website or by logging on to www.gov.uk/studentfinance. Alternatively, they can contact the Customer Support Office on 0845 300 5090 to obtain a paper form.
Careers Fair on Progress Day On Thursday 11 February
A
a Careers Fair for all students will take place in the Sports Hall between 10am – 3pm. The aim of the event is to provide information about a range of local opportunities and this year we are delighted to have over 20 different businesses coming along ranging from estate agency, NHS, apprenticeships to engineering. This will provide all students and parents with an excellent opportunity to find out about a wide range of career paths.
If you require any further information, please contact Mr Neill or Mrs Pells in school.

Does your child have a weekend job or work after school?
If your child is thinking of looking for part time employment or already has an after school job but no work permit, you may find the following information useful.
The Education Welfare Service spent a week at the beginning of the summer holidays 2008, calling on employers across the county to find out how many were working illegally and to give the employers the information they needed to make any child employment legal. As a result they found that about 75% of the children working were illegally employed. Education Welfare Officers repeated this exercise across the county during the 2009 summer holiday.
Did you know that if your child has a weekend job, holiday job, or works before or after school they must have a work permit and that this is law? Your child's employer is legally responsible for applying for the permit and that failure to do so can lead to prosecution and heavy fines.
The law is there to protect the children - work permits can only be issued for work that is allowed by law and only for the hours children are permitted to work. Children working without a permit are employed illegally and may not be covered by their employers insurance. This has serious implications for those children who are injured at work and need compensation, or have property damaged or stolen (e.g. bicycle on a paper round).
The hours children can work vary according to their age and whether it is term or holiday time.
The legislation surrounding the employment of children is complicated. If you are concerned that your child is working illegally with no permit, or has a permit but being is being unfairly treated, you can contact the Education Welfare Officer responsible for child employment who will be able to help you.
Contact her by phone on 01392 384713; by email at christine.ellison@devon.gov.uk or by letter to Mrs C. Ellison, Child Employment Officer, EWS, Learning Development Partnership, Great Moor House, Bittern Road, Sowton, Exeter, EX2 7NL
She will be able to answer any queries you may have or will send an information leaflet on child employment along with the work permit application form. These can also be downloaded from the Devon County Council website at: www.devon.gov.uk/child_employment |

By Head of Maths – Mr J Hensby
We would like to take this opportunity to remind students, parents and carers that the Mymaths website is available 24/7 to help students improve on their Maths work. There will be occasions that teachers will set homework tasks from the website and we expect students to make every effort to complete these. Anyone can use the website to revise for forthcoming examinations by accessing the booster packs at the appropriate level.
The login is bideford and the password is fraction.
Every student also has their own unique login and password known only to them.
The Maths department are running a Maths club every week on a Wednesday after college from 3:15 – 4:15pm. Every student is welcome to attend to get support with homework and revision or to do enrichment activities. For GCSE students we are offering the excellent Mathswatch CD for sale at a price of £3. This offers tutorial type support on any GCSE topic at any grade. We are also selling our revision guides for half price at only £1.50 each.
All year 11 students are invited to attend revision sessions with the Maths team on Tuesdays straight after college.
We expect students on the C/D grade borderline to attend as this will help them realise their full potential. We also expect students to come to their Maths lessons with all the correct equipment including a scientific calculator. If any student does not have one, then these can be purchased from the cash office for £3 each.
We want every student to be successful in Mathematics and to gain the best possible experience in this subject during their time at Bideford College.
Dont forget to visit the Departmental Homepages

Mr Hopkins As part of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2009, 60 of our Year 10 Business and Media students took part in the ‘Make Your Mark Challenge’. Each team was given a brief and had to produce an original and innovative idea which was enterprising, creative but had a positive environmental aspect.
This was then supported by research into competitors, customer wants and needs and finance. Each team presented their idea to a panel of judges.
There were some fantastic ideas including fruit sweets, the raw materials for which were produced through a regenerative fruit tree planting programme and focused on the need for more healthy treats for children, Eco Adventure which offered holidays with an understanding and respect for the environment, Eco Hotel made entirely and powered by sustainable materials and energy sources and Eco Textiles which recycled clothing and textiles into luxury handmade household items. Our winner, however, was the very impressive Surfboard Company who produced a board that had the environmental and commercial unique selling proposition at the forefront of its ethos and would undoubtedly be a winner in the market place.
Congratulations to all the year 10 students who took part!
